LCM vs. GCF: which one do you need?
One finds a shared multiple; the other finds a shared divisor.

Start with 8 and 12
The greatest common factor, also called greatest common divisor or highest common factor, is the largest positive integer dividing both numbers. Factors of 8 include 1, 2, 4 and 8; factors of 12 include 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12. The largest shared factor is 4. The least common multiple is 24, because it is the smallest positive number divisible by both 8 and 12.
Use the question to choose
If you are splitting items into the largest equal groups with no remainder, the GCF may be the useful value. If you are finding when repeated events next coincide, or choosing a denominator shared by fractions, the LCM may be useful. For example, groups of 8 red items and 12 blue items can form 4 identical sets with no leftovers; cycles of 8 and 12 minutes align after 24 minutes if they begin together.
Check the relationship
For two positive integers, GCF × LCM equals their product. Here, 4 × 24 = 96 and 8 × 12 = 96. This is a useful independent check, but it does not mean multiplying the smallest and largest values works for lists of three or more numbers. ClearLCM shows the GCF of the entire list alongside its LCM and displays each pairwise calculation so you can follow the distinction.
